Hilmar deals with personnel losses; still eyeing playoffs

Hilmar High's boys basketball team didn't earn a Trans Valley League Championship or make it to the post-season last year but it did lay a foundation for the future-or so it thought. Anchored by then freshman Demsen McFaddin, who led the team with 359 points, the Yellowjackets looked poised to put together a potent offense for the next three years.

Bruce Scott returns to lead Hilmar wrestling

The last time Bruce Scott coached wrestling at Hilmar High Bill Clinton had just been elected president, the World Wide Web was in its infancy, and Whitney Houston was at the top of the pop charts. Now, 19 years later, Scott has returned as head coach of Hilmar's wrestling program. Even though many things have changed in the world since, Scott's found that not much has changed inside the wrestling room.

Added numbers give Lady Jackets hope

Last season Hilmar High's girls basketball team struggled with numbers, boasting a nine person roster and making life tough in the already challenging Trans Valley League. But things are looking up for the Yellowjackets this season, Hilmar returns with five experienced players and a couple newcomers in what head coach Don Inman sees as a playoff caliber team.

Turlock, Pitman see mixed results at tourney

The four day Dick Windemuth Easter Baseball Tournament was cut short on Thursday as heavy rain forced officials to cancel the event. After only two games Turlock and Pitman High were sent home, the Bulldogs 0-2 and the Pride 2-0 in the tournament.

Caught in the rain

While baseball and softball teams watched Wednesday's downpour, wondering if they would play or not, Denair and Turlock Christian high athletes stepped on to the track at Joe Debely Stadium ready to compete in the third Southern Athletic Track meet of the season. The Coyotes and Eagles joined the other SAL schools on the track and field as the rain came and went in 15 to 20 minute intervals, undeterred by the windy, wet, cold weather.

Hilmar bests Le Grand before tourney cancellation

Hilmar High's 3rd annual Easter baseball tournament kicked off on Wednesday, welcoming six schools from across the area for four days of friendly, yet fierce competition. The Yellowjackets (4-2 TVL) played their first game on Thursday, facing off against the Southern Athletic League's Le Grand High. Prior to the game some feared that the heavy rain would delay the matchup but the weather cleared long enough for Hilmar to take a 12-6 win over the Bulldogs.

Local anglers take second place at Central Valley tourney

Monster bass was caught by Dan Marshall at Don Pedro on April 7 in the Central Valley WRL tournament. Twenty teams arrived early in anticipation of big fish being caught with the full moon bringing the fish in shallow to spawn.

Rain can’t keep TC away from the track

The Brenda Athletic Club Invitational at California State University, Stanislaus was intended to host 28 schools but Saturday's downpour forced ten of those schools to cancel their appearances and several others to pull out of the event early. Turlock and Denair High were among those who decided to avoid the cold, wet weather but Turlock Christian High braved the elements, competing against the remaining schools who decided the forty degree weather and rain wouldn't keep them off the track.

Ready, set, draw

Turlock and Pitman High met for the first time this season Tuesday afternoon as girls from both schools assembled at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex. After 90 minutes of effort neither the Bulldogs (4-0-1 CCC) nor the Pride (3-0-2 CCC) walked away with a win. The final score was 1-1.

Turlock and Pitman High had two goals coming into this season; win the Central California Conference championship and make playoffs.

Taking it to the mat

The Division I South Wrestling Championships belonged to Turlock High this year. The Bulldogs pulled out one of their best divisional performances in school history with their first place finish of 225 team points, more than a hundred points ahead of second place McNair High.

Pitman and Denair’s girls come up short in playoffs

Pitman High's postseason ended before it really began on Monday when the Pride (13-15 overall) faced Chavez High of Stockton. The Titans (16-11 overall) took advantage of a low energy Pitman team that struggled to find the basket, winning the out bracket game 51-44.

Pitman upsets Buhach Colony

Pitman High's boys finished off their season with a 55-50 upset over Buhach Colony High Wednseday night. The Thunder (9-5 CCC) arrived at Pitman's gym tied with Turlock in the CCC but a determined Pride (8-7 CCC) team knocked them down to third place and out of title contention.

TC claims Southern Crown again

The lady Eagles of Turlock Christian High earned their third consecutive Southern Conference title with Thursday's 76-31 victory over Waterford High. TC once again hit the court without Halie Bergman but the trio of Rebekah Muller (22 points), Natalie Snyder (22 points), and Marly Burton (15 points) stepped up to help the Eagles close out conference play decidedly. Muller and Burton also controlled the boards on defense, recording fifteen and fourteen rebounds respectively.
