Gallery exhibit features 20 years of Emerson’s shapes and patterns

The California State University, Stanislaus Department of Art is hosting an exhibit by Mark L. Emerson through the end of this week. "Twenty Years Painting" opened on Aug. 22 in the University Art Gallery and will run until Friday. Emerson's paintings are mostly polymer on canvas and range in size from 12 by 12 inches to 7 feet high. The paintings are colorful collections of shapes and patterns with varying textures.

Spring Juried Art Show now on display in City Hall

City Hall was unusually active this weekend, with artists from all over the Central Valley dropping off their entries for the 29th annual Spring Juried Art Show. Judging took place on Sunday and the show is now on display at the Turlock City Gallery inside of City Hall.

Works sought for Spring Juried Art Show

The Turlock City Arts Commission is now taking submissions for their 29th annual Spring Juried Arts Show and Sale. Independent judges will select the best pieces to display in the Turlock City Hall Gallery and award prizes to the winners. A new prize, the Ornament Award, will be selected by commissioners and the winner will have his or her artwork featured on Christmas ornaments sold by the commission.

Wax poetic for Turlock contest

Poets of all ages are scouring the town and their imagination in search of inspiration for the "Ode to Turlock" poetry contest. This contest is the first of its kind held by the California State University, Stanislaus Modern Languages Program in conjuncture with the Turlock City Arts Commission. The poetry contest was proposed by Teresa Bargetto-Andrès, a professor at CSU Stanislaus and a Turlock City Arts Commissioner. Turlock artist opens yurt for clay classes

Children and adults who love to get their hands dirty in the name of art have a new outlet for creative expression in an unconventional classroom. Titia Barnett-Gudde converted her backyard yurt into an art studio classroom where she will offer clay lessons for young and old. The yurt is a portable, but sturdy, lattice-framed tent and Barnett-Gudde said that it makes for a surprisingly good work space.

Hospital puts out call for artists

Emanuel Medical Center is taking a creative approach to cancer awareness this year with an art competition.The competition is part of the 13th annual Women's Cancer Awareness Event presented by the Emanuel Regional Cancer Services. The theme for the Oct. 12 event is "The Art of Life."The center is currently accepting entries into the art competition. In some form the art should help promote early screening for breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers.

Friday Night Live heats up with casino theme

Friday nights will be a little livelier in downtown Turlock thanks to a new local arts event. Local artists, musicians, poets and other performers will showcase their craft during "Friday Night Live" events at the Downtown Incubator. Each week's event will be a little different, but the current lineup spans from open mic night to standup comedy to live art demonstrations. The event falls on the same day as the Farmers Market in downtown Turlock, so vendors and entertainers can set up on the sidewalk without a permit.
