City Hall was unusually active this weekend, with artists from all over the Central Valley dropping off their entries for the 29th annual Spring Juried Art Show. Judging took place on Sunday and the show is now on display at the Turlock City Gallery inside of City Hall.

Turlock artist opens yurt for clay classes

Children and adults who love to get their hands dirty in the name of art have a new outlet for creative expression in an unconventional classroom. Titia Barnett-Gudde converted her backyard yurt into an art studio classroom where she will offer clay lessons for young and old. The yurt is a portable, but sturdy, lattice-framed tent and Barnett-Gudde said that it makes for a surprisingly good work space.

Arts in the Classroom: Teaching van Gogh

Sixth grade students at Cunningham Elementary School spent Tuesday studying and making their own representations of Vincent van Gogh's famous Sunflowers. The art instruction was made available to Cunningham students through the Arts in the Classroom program, funded by the Kiwanis Club of Turlock and offered through the Stanislaus County Arts Council. Cunningham fifth graders took part in the art classes in March, but their focus was on clay instead of painting.
