The suspect wanted for the murder of a Merced County couple was taken into custody Wednesday night in Louisiana.
Julio Cesar Guevara Bonilla, 52, was tracked down to Jefferson Parish, La., through leads that came from his family members, said Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin.
“We’ve taken a believed killer off the streets,” Pazin said of the arrest.
Bonilla initially gave the Jefferson Parish law enforcement a false name, but was taken into custody without incident. He has waved extradition and will be returned to California to face possible homicide charges in the death of William Cisneros, 82, and his wife, Clara Cisneros, 42, both of Merced.
The decomposing bodies of the Merced County couple were found Sept. 30 in the laundry room of their home in the 400 block of E. Mission Avenue in Merced.
An autopsy report stated the couple had been stabbed multiple times. A positive identification is pending the report of a forensic dentist, Pazin said.
Bonilla was initially a person of interest in the case, but as the investigation developed, sheriff’s detectives classified him as a suspect.
Bonilla lived on the same property as the couple and helped them with their home-based gardening business for the last three years.
Pazin said Bonilla first went to Corona, then Victorville, and then Jefferson Parish.
Detectives suspect robbery may have been one motive in the killings. Property belonging to the couple, including televisions, jewelry, and luggage, were recovered at Bonilla’s relatives’ homes.
A complaint about a couple of starving dogs on the property led to the discovery of the bodies, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie. A Merced County animal control officer didn’t get any response at the house and called for deputies, who initiated a welfare check and entered the residence. A deputy found the two bodies in a laundry room.
Pazin said the sheriff’s department has sent several objects to the Department of Justice for analysis and to determine if any of them are the murder weapon.
Anthony Cisneros, the nephew of the couple, said it has helped to put the family at ease knowing a suspect is in custody.
