The project to construct a new Mountain View Middle School gym, originally scheduled to open this month, has been beset by delays that will push the project back well into the new year.
Construction awaits the approval of the California Division of the State Architect, which is currently reviewing the steel truss roof design. According to Chatom Union School District Superintendent Jack Mayer construction should take approximately six months following approval, which he expects soon.
“It’s moving along, it’s progressing,” Mayer said. “We’re hoping for good weather this winter to get it all completed.”
The multipurpose gym, along with other district building projects, was funded through a $5 million bond passed by voters in Nov. 2006. The bond was CUSD’s first since the construction of Chatom Elementary School in 1958.
When completed, the gym will host athletic events such as volleyball and basketball matches, assemblies, and various arts programs for Mountain View Middle School’s approximately 200 students. The district will also rent out the facility for community events and private functions such as family reunions, Mayer said.
Mayer declined to estimate when the new gym would now open, following the delays.
“The project is definitely moving along,” Mayer said. “It’s taking longer than anticipated, but that’s pretty normal.”
