A confrontation between two men erupted into violence Saturday afternoon and left one man dead from a fatal stab wound.

The victim is a 22-year-old Turlock man. Police have taken a 52-year-old Turlock man into custody in connection to the stabbing.

The victim’s name has not been released by the Turlock Police Department, pending notification of his family.

The stabbing occurred in the 1200 block of N. Olive Avenue at 2:40 p.m. Saturday. Officers were responding to the scene for a report of an aggravated assault and found the victim, who had suffered at least one stab wound. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Turlock Police Sgt. Nino Amirfar said.

As units were en route to the 1200 block of N. Olive, they spotted a man matching the description of the assailant just a few blocks from the crime scene, and witnesses identified him as the person responsible for the stabbing, said Investigations Sgt. Russell Holeman.

The 52-year-old Turlock man was taken into custody. Police are not releasing his name because they said it could jeopardize the investigation at this point. Detectives are actively pursuing additional information and possible witnesses, Amirfar said.

Investigators said the victim and the suspect knew each other and that they got into an argument earlier Saturday that led to a physical confrontation that resulted in the stabbing. The incident does not appear to be gang-related, Amirfar said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Turlock Police Department Det. Lee Medlin at 668-5550 ext. 6627.

The Turlock Police Department is an active participant in the Crime Stoppers Program. Callers can leave an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 521-4636 and may be eligible for a cash reward.
