Hilmar High Preview

The 2012 varsity Hilmar High Yellowjackets

POSTED September 10, 2012 11:05 a.m.

2011 Record: 5-1 TVL, 12-2 Overall

Head Coach: Frank Marques (10th season)

Top Returners: Tyler Freitas, Corey Bayer, Jesus Izazaga

Newcomers: Beau Balswick, Breck Smith, David Bisby, Joseph Bello,

The Hilmar High Yellowjackets enter this season as defending Sac-Joaquin Section IV Champions but you wouldn’t know it from watching or listening to them at practice. Although this season’s goal is to repeat, last season’s championship win is not spoken of. The past is overshadowed by the future.

Hilmar’s offensive plan will be the same as it has been in years past; a steady rushing attack balanced with an opportunistic passing game. Hilmar’s one-two punch of Brek Smith and Jesus Izazaga should result in a lot of covered ground as they run behind an offensive line anchored by the only returning starter on the team Corey Bayer.

As for the ‘Jacket aerial attack, Tyler Freitas, Beau Balswick, and Dustin Fantazia have all shown themselves to be worthy candidates for the quarterback position; creating a pool of depth for Head Coach Frank Marques to choose from. Frietas holds up with his experience, leadership qualities, and scrambling abilities while Balswick and Fantazia provide the height and arm strength associated with the traditional quarterback.

Hilmar also has a rotating cast of wide receivers who are ready to contribute. Newcomers Kenny and Kris Camden and Trent Orosco will be joined by Ryan Oliveira to round out the ‘Jacket offense. The ability to provide multiple players at skill positions has become a trend of success for Hilmar, allowing for fresh legs and interchangeable parts to move its fast tempo offensive machine.

Although varsity experience is hard to come by this season, Coach Marques expects his team’s TVL campaign to be led by both talent and will. If Hilmar can find its rhythm early another exciting season should ensue with the ‘Jackets once again contending for a Section Title.
