Unleash the athlete inside

POSTED September 10, 2012 11:32 a.m.

So you got accepted in college but didn’t receive an athletic scholarship, it seems all those years of hard work and competition during your high school athletic career were wasted and your playing days are now over, right?

Wrong. You’ve obviously never heard of Intramural Sports.

California State University, Stanislaus is just one of the many institutions across the nation that provides its student body with opportunities to unleash the athlete inside. For more than a decade Stanislaus has offered men’s and co-ed leagues for sports like volleyball and dodge ball to ultimate Frisbee. Now, for the first time ever, Stanislaus is also offering an all women’s league as it attempts to diversify the field of competition. Stanislaus has also restructured its semester scheduling in the hopes of increasing student involvement.

“We’re trying to create new opportunities for students to participate,” ASI Recreations Assistant Miguel Rumayor said. “In the past we offered more sports per semester but we’ve rearranged it to increase participation by focusing on primary sports.”

Last semester alone, more than 1,000 Warriors took part in the Intramural program. This fall with volleyball, outdoor soccer, flag football, and basketball on the schedule ASI is hoping to increase that participation by 50 percent.

Students like Stephanie O’Quinn, who will be participating in her fourth year of Intramural Sports, are excited about the program’s new direction. O’Quinn, a four year soccer player in high school, has played softball, kickball, and flag football as well as indoor and outdoor Soccer in the past and enjoys the chance to stay active while she pursues her academic career.

“I love that the program gives me the opportunity to play for fun instead of playing at an extreme competitive level,” O’Quinn said. “I’ve got the chance to meet a lot of new people and I’ve also had the chance to experience new sports I had never heard of before.”

In addition to the men’s, women’s, and co-ed leagues there are also A and B sub-leagues to accommodate competitive levels. Those looking to push themselves physically can sign up for the A league while students who simply want to have fun and unwind can join the B league.

“It’s a cheap way to exercise and you get to play with your fellow students,” Rumayor said.

“It’s a really good program,” O’Quinn said. “I think everyone should do it.”

Signups for the fall begin on Aug. 27 and end on Sept. 10. Students who are interested should visit the ASI offices on campus or IMLeagues.com.
