A Turlock man was struck and killed by a freight train early Monday morning.

The deceased was identified by the Turlock Police Department as Jeremy Wiley, 32.

Turlock Police Investigations Sgt. Russell Holeman said Wiley’s death appears accidental and may have been caused by Wiley falling asleep or passing out next to the railroad tracks at Golden State Boulevard and Fulkerth Road.

Wiley is believed to have visited the Stanislaus County Fair and at least one Turlock bar in the hours before his death, Holeman said. Investigators are waiting on toxicology results.

The accident was reported by the train personnel, who stated they had seen “an object” near the tracks but were unsure if it was struck by the train.

Emergency personnel went out to check the tracks and found Wiley, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident was reported at 3:43 a.m. Monday. The train did not stop at the scene.

It’s unknown why Wiley was in that particular spot. Holeman said it was not a route that would have taken him home.
