Assyrian Martyr’s Day event to be held Sunday

POSTED August 5, 2011 7:56 p.m.

Assyrians across the country will recognize Assyrian Martyr’s Day on Sunday. Locally, there will be an event held at Turlock Memorial Park to recognize and celebrate Assyrians who have been martyred over the centuries.

“There have been thousands upon thousands,” said Charles Givargis, a member of the Assyrian Democratic Movement.

The somber program will include representatives from eight organizations from across Stanislaus County. It will include prayers and speeches, and children will present flowers and candles at the grave of Mar-Shomon, a patriarch buried on the grounds of Turlock Memorial Park.

The event is sponsored by The Assyrian American National Federation (Western Region) and will be held at Turlock Memorial Park, 425 N. Soderquist Rd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m.
