Fire, police host memorial event

The Turlock Fire and Police departments are holding a memorial Sunday to honor the fallen on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m., the exact time the first plane struck the World Trade Center North Tower. The service is being held at the Turlock Fire Station at 540 E. Marshall St.

The scheduled keynote speaker is John McPartland, vice president of BART and a retired Army Colonel.

McPartland served in the Army for seven years and did two tours in Vietnam. After leaving the service he joined the Reserves and rose through the ranks. During his time with the Reserves, McPartland was called to duty several times, including in Desert Storm. Over his years of service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.

Additionally, McPartland retired from the Oakland Fire Department as Chief Officer after 25 years.

Joining McPartland as scheduled speakers are Mayor John Lazar, interim Police Chief Dave Young, and Fire Chief Tim Lohman.

The services also will include a 21-gun salute, bell ringing, and a performance by the Westside Ministries choir.
