Pedestrian in fatal collision identified

The Merced County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman killed Oct. 10 on Golden State Boulevard as 26-year-old Turlock resident Whitney Manzano.

The incident was reported just before 2:30 a.m. Oct. 10 on the southbound lanes of Golden State Boulevard, south of Griffith Avenue.

Manzano walked from the west shoulder of Golden State Boulevard in an easterly direction directly into the path of the oncoming Mazda 3, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver of the Mazda, Carlos Desousa, 45, of Delhi, hit his brakes, but was unable to avoid striking Manzano. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Desousa suffered minor injuries and was treated at Emanuel Medical Center.
