October has come to an end, and with it the Turlock Firefighters' "Working Toward a Cure" fundraising campaign for Emanuel Cancer Center.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the fire department substituted their normal blue uniform and donned specially designed pink t-shirts to support breast cancer research and treatment. The fire department also sold the t-shirts with all the profits going to Emanuel Cancer Center. The t-shirts were purchased by the Turlock Firefighters Local 2434 union.
Businesses, non-profit and school groups, and families all supported the cause by wearing the pink tees around town — and on vacation.
There's still time to purchase a Turlock Firefighters' t-shirt. Emanuel Medical Center gift shop will be selling the shirts through Sunday for the fundraising campaign. As of Tuesday, the gift shop had already sold 874 shirts.
According to Turlock firefighter Frank Saldivar, the campaign has been far more successful than organizers had originally imagined for its first year.
The total number of t-shirts sold through the EMC gift shop, the fire department, Turlock Farmers Market booth and through The Cupcake Lady — and final count of money raised for Emanuel Cancer Center — will be announced at the Nov. 13 Turlock City Council meeting. The City Council meets at 7 p.m. in the Yosemite Room of Turlock City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.
