POSTED January 8, 2013 7:07 p.m.

Two events aimed at grieving will be held in Turlock — one for those suffering a loss and another to help train grief counselors.

A free community program will be held from  7 p.m.  to 9 p.m. Feb. 7 at Monte Vista Chapel, 1619 E. Monte Vista Ave. in Turlock. The program is designed especially for people who are grieving the loss of someone significant. The topic of the workshop is, “Loving from the Outside In, Mourning from the Inside Out” which is also the title of nationally recognized grief counselor and author Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt's latest book. To RSVP to attend this free event, register online at www.griefcope.eventbrite.com or call 664-2550.

The next day, Feb. 8, Dr. Wolfelt will conduct a training aimed at grief support professionals and volunteers from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Larsa Banquet Hall at 2107 East Monte Vista Ave., in Turlock. The workshop is titled “The Art of Companioning the Mourner: Caregiver Principles to Bring Hope and Healing.”

“The training is designed for caregivers and professionals – doctors, nurses, counselors, teachers, police and firefighters – anyone who deals directly with those who are grieving,” said Erin Nelson, executive director of Jessica’s House, Emanuel’s grief support program for children, teens, and families. “He will explain the companioning philosophy of grief care, in which the professional doesn’t assume the role of an expert or guide, but of a listener and learner.”

The cost of the daylong training is $65 which includes a boxed lunch. Registration is required. Register online by Jan. 27 at www.griefcope.eventbrite.com. Continuing Education Units are available for attendees.
