Freeway crash in Delhi claims one life

POSTED February 5, 2013 9:47 p.m.

An 18-year-old Fresno man was killed after being hit by a tractor-trailer truck while standing along Highway 99 in Delhi.

The victim’s name had not been released pending next of kin notification.

The 18-year-old was struck moments after crashing his 1999 Isuzu Amigo into the freeway guardrail, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 18-year-old was headed southbound on Highway 99, north of Collier Road shortly after 4 a.m. Monday. For an unknown reason the Isuzu drifted off the roadway and collided with the metal guardrail. The Isuzu overturned and came to a rest blocking the middle lane of the highway.

The 18-year-old got out of the Isuzu after the crash and was standing near the right shoulder of the vehicle, the CHP reported.

Minutes after the crash a 2008 Peterbuilt truck, pulling a cattle trailer, was heading southbound on the highway and approaching the Isuzu.

The CHP report stated the driver of the truck, 30-year-old John Vanderveen of Tulare saw the debris in the road and was moving into the left lane when the 18-year-old suddenly ran onto the freeway in an easterly direction, right into the path of the truck.

The truck hit the 18-year-old and the Isuzu causing fatal injuries for the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Vanderveen was not injured.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. The collision remains under investigation.
