Turlock fire fighters responded to two other fires Tuesday night after battling an inferno at a vacant cheese factory.

While the flames continued to burn at the former Lactalis USA plant at 1400 W. Main Street, a new fire call was issued for a vacant home about two blocks away.

A fire was reported around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home on the corner of W. Main Street and Clifford Avenue. Smoke could be seen creeping out from the boarded up windows, but few flames were visible. The Turlock Rural Fire Department responded to that fire, along with one Turlock fire engine pulled from the cheese plant.

The house, which sits next door to a church and across the street from a convalescent home, is often covered in gang graffiti.

It’s suspected the fire was started by transients inside the house trying to stay warm.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday the fire department was busy battling another blaze. This fire was located at a duplex at 573 Castor Street and left two residents displaced, the Turlock Fire Department reported.

The fire originated in the common attic above the duplex. It spread quickly through the air ducts and caused structural damage to the ceiling and roof. The estimated dollar loss was put at $30,000.

The two residents were able to get out of the duplex without injury.
