Explosion injures one in Turlock

The Turlock Fire Department responded to an explosion at a duplex on N. Olive Avenue Saturday night that injured one man.

POSTED May 15, 2017 1:08 p.m.

A man received second and third-degree burns from an explosion at a Turlock duplex Saturday night, the Turlock Fire Department reported.

The cause of the explosion and the resulting fire is under investigation by the Turlock Police Department. The explosion may have been from possible drug activity at the residence, according to the fire department.

The fire department was dispatched to the two-story duplex at 1020 N. Olive Ave., at 8:51 p.m. Saturday. The initial call was for emergency medical services, but the first crew to arrive found the duplex filling up with a light gray smoke, according to the fire department.

The man was standing outside the duplex when the firefighters arrived. He had sustained second and third-degree burns over approximately 20 percent of his body, according to the fire department. The fire fighters rendered first-aid to the man and called for an air ambulance, which was used to take him to a burn treatment center.

Witnesses at the scene informed the fire fighters that there had been an explosion in the man’s residence. Firefighters extinguished some of the smoldering debris in the residence and checked the duplex for fire extension.

"City firefighters encountered numerous issues upon arrival, which required quick, skilled action," said Turlock Fire Chief Robert Talloni.

A total of 13 personnel from the fire department responded to the call.

Given the suspicious circumstances of the call, the fire department requested the Turlock Police Department respond to the scene.

The fire and explosion are currently under investigation and any questions or information can be directed to the Fire Marshal at 668-5580.
