Within a short time the bounty of crops toiled and harvested from the fields around Turlock will once again fill the booths of the Turlock Certified Farmers’ Market, as the organization returns for its second year.

The market will make its debut for the season on May 6. It will be set up on Broadway Avenue near Main Street and will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Friday through Oct. 28.

The farmers’ market was reinstated last year after a four year absence through the work of a volunteer board and quickly became a popular draw for those looking for local options.

Market Manager Brandon Follett said this year’s farmers’ market will continue to add onto the successes of the inaugural year and bring in some new attractions.

“The goal of the market is to be a resource for healthy choices,” Follett said. “The TCFM is proud to provide a family-friendly environment where parents can shop with their children.  In the 2011 season, we will continue to develop partnerships with local schools, mom’s clubs and other organizations to educate our youth about what it means to be ‘Always Local.’”

The market has about 30 vendors lined up for different durations through the season.

“This will give the market a little variation week to week,” Follett said.

The vendors will include those selling fresh produce, baked goods, and crafts. The market will also have lunch vendors and spots to sit down and eat at the marketplace.

For the second year, the TCFM decided to incorporate themes and activities into each market. Scheduled in May is a performance by the Osbourne Elementary School dance troupe Folklorico; a bike to the market day; and a Public Works day featuring a display by the City of Turlock.

“In June we partner with Emanuel Medical Center for the Teddy-Bear Clinic, where kids can bring their stuffed animals to the market to be ‘operated’ on by medical staff,” Follett said. “These are just a few of the ways we hope to engage the community more with the market.”

The TCFM will also hold three night markets, set for June 24, Aug. 26 and the 2^nd Annual Fall Fest on Oct. 26.

“These evening markets will be in addition to the regularly scheduled morning market and are a great opportunity for those who work during the day to make it to the market,” Follett said.

The TCFM has launched a new Web site at www.turlockmarket.org that will feature updated information, recipes and vendor lists.
