A Turlock man convicted of attacking a police officer has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Adam Craig Vasconcellos, 26, was convicted by a jury on misdemeanor charges of battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

Shortly after midnight on July 20, 2010, Vasconcellos was observed stumbling down Main Street in Turlock. He was stopped and found to be under the influence of alcohol and unable to care for himself.

He was arrested and secured into the back of a police car for transport to the Stanislaus County Jail. While en route, Vasconcellos unbuckled his seat belt and began kicking the windows and interior of the police car. When the lead officer opened the back door of the car, Vasconcellos attacked the officer by grabbing him by the throat, according to the prosecution. Vasconcellos was pepper sprayed and wrestled to the ground until he finally stopped struggling.

Upon receiving the verdicts, Judge Thomas Zeff placed Vasconcellos on 36 months of probation and sentenced him to 90 days in county jail, with 88 days suspended, and 20 hours of community service.
