Police check sex registrants

A compliance check of registered sex offenders by the Turlock Police Department found 16 individuals in violation.

The City of Turlock has 112 individuals who have registered as required by California Penal Code 290, also known as Sex Offender Registration Act.

A surprise check over a two-day period by eight officers confirmed the addresses of 102 registered sex offenders. Of those, 16 were found to be out of compliance, said TPD Sgt. Nino Amirfar. Criminal complaints were filed against the 16 and forwarded to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.

Several individuals were listed as transients and are required to register every 30 days. Turlock has 10 transient registrants, of which four were out of compliance, Amirfar said.

A follow up check will be completed on these individuals to insure compliance and criminal complaints will be filed for non-compliance.

The operation took more than 100 hours to coordinate, Amirfar said.

“The operation was extremely successful,” Amirfar said. “The Turlock Police Department will continue to conduct unannounced compliance checks in order to insure that registrants are current regarding their addresses of record. This is critical to maintaining up to date information on the Megan’s Law website.”
