Three suspects are in custody for a shooting in Winton that injured one man on Monday, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The victim, a 24-year-old Hispanic male, sustained a single gunshot wound to his upper back from a large caliber handgun. He was airlifted to a Modesto hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.

The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. in the 7000 block of Winton Way.

According to witnesses to the shooting, a Jeep with several subjects inside it pulled up to the home and started shouting gang slurs. Suddenly, the gang slurs stopped and shots rang out, with one bullet striking the victim in the back.

 A short time later, deputies spotted the Jeep in Livingston and conducted a high-risk traffic stop. As the vehicle came to a stop, one of the suspects took off running, but the other two were taken into custody immediately by the deputies. The investigation soon uncovered the identity of the third suspect, who was apprehended a short time later, MacKenzie said.

Arrested was 18-year-old Sergio Lopez of Delhi for assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime, belonging to a street gang and violation of probation. Lopez remains jailed without bail.

The second suspect, Marcrudy Salinas, 21, of Delhi remains in custody on $100,000 bail for assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and belonging to a street gang.

The third suspect is a 17-year-old Hispanic male who was booked into Juvenile Hall without bail.
