Suspect caught breaking open vending machine

Turlock Police officers arrested 37-year-old Shane Schmidt Saturday night after spotting him drilling into a vending machine.

Schmidt was allegedly seen drilling into a vending machine outside the Cost Less Foods at 255 W. Main St., shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday.

According to the police report, Schmidt attempted to hide the drill and other property behind the vending machine as the officers approached him.

Officers found a backpack full of quarters, a drill and a lock behind the vending machine.

The money from one vending machine had already been emptied out, according to the police report.

Schmidt was arrested on suspicion of damaging property, possession of burglary tools, petty theft and resisting arrest.
