A fight spurred by suspected gang rivalries in Delhi left two men hospitalized with stab wounds, one in critical condition, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Investigators believe the two injured men were responsible for stabbing one another. Both have been uncooperative with investigators, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.

The sheriff’s department found the first victim, a Latino male in his 20s, while responding to a report of a fight in the parking lot of Cottonwood Liquors at 9893 Stephens St., in Delhi.

The man had been stabbed twice in the leg, MacKenzie said.

As deputies arrived at the scene several people were running from the area. It appeared the fight had originated at a party at a home next door to the liquor store before spilling over into the parking lot, MacKenzie said.

A short time after finding the first victim the sheriff’s department learned of a second. The Turlock Police Department contacted the sheriff’s department to notify them of a stabbing victim found at Lander Avenue and Highway 99. That victim was transported to a Modesto hospital where he underwent surgery for his wounds. He is listed in stable but critical condition and his wounds were described as life threatening.

Investigators suspect the two victims were fighting with one another over gang rivalries and caused the injuries to one another.
