Turlock Police Sgt. Anthony Silva remains hospitalized, but in stable condition after he was struck by a car while holding two suspects at gunpoint Friday night.

Silva sustained multiple fractures to one leg and other injuries from the Friday night accident. Silva underwent a seven hour surgery to repair the fractures and is looking at a long recovery time, Turlock Police Lt. Nino Amirfar said.

“He is in extremely good spirits and is very grateful for all of the positive support,” Amirfar said.

Silva was injured while responding to a burglary-in-progress call in the 100 block of S. Berkeley Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Silva was holding two suspects at gunpoint and moving to a safe location when he was hit by an approaching vehicle. The vehicle was traveling at an estimated 25 to 30 mph.

The woman driving the car stayed at the scene to help Silva, but the two suspects fled the area.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the accident.

Amirfar said the driver has been very cooperative and regularly asks about Silva’s condition, as he did for her.

“Tony wanted me to call her and make sure she was doing ok,” Amirfar said.

A search of the neighborhood showed no home had been broken into and the police department believes Silva interrupted the would-be burglars.
