A Modesto man wanted for stabbing a man to death was arrested Wednesday at a Turlock homeless shelter.

The Modesto Police Department had issued an arrest warrant for Francisco Hernandez Gonzales, 50, for the murder of 55-year-old Trinidad Cordero, the longtime boyfriend of Gonzales’ sister.

Cordero died from multiple stab wounds that he received the morning of Jan. 12 at the Redwoods apartment complex on Yosemite Boulevard in Modesto. According to the Modesto Police Department, Gonzales fled the complex after the stabbing with the assistance of two of his relatives.

An anonymous tip earlier this week to the Turlock Police Department said Gonzales was staying at the We Care Shelter on S. Broadway.

At 4 a.m. Wednesday Turlock police officers went to the shelter and took Gonzales into custody without incident.

Gonzales had been at the shelter for several days and was registered under a fictitious name. The shelter does not require a photo identification card for visitors, though the shelter does send new visitors’ information to the Turlock Police Department on a regular basis.

The relatives who allegedly helped Gonzales flee — Richard Gonzales, 26, and Jaime Bacca, 33 — were arrested earlier this week on accessory charges.

Gonzales remains in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail in lieu of a $1 million bail.
