Driver killed in solo wreck outside Turlock

A 29-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence crashed his truck early Sunday morning on Santa Fe Avenue and died from his injuries, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The deceased was identified as Barry Dejong of Ballico, according to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Around 3 a.m. Sunday Dejong was driving his 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup southbound on Santa Fe Avenue at an undetermined speed.

Just north of East Avenue, Dejong allowed the pickup to travel off the east side of the road, where it struck a barbed wire fence. The impact caused the pickup to overturn several times, the CHP reported.

Dejong was not wearing a seat belt according to the CHP and was ejected onto the gravel shoulder of the roadway. He sustained fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pickup came to a rest on its wheels facing westbound traffic.

The CHP does suspect alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
