From Oct. 14 to Oct. 16, CSU Stanislaus will play host to the fifth annual Conference for Sustainable Futures.

This year, the conference will occur at the same time as the annual Bioneers Conference of social and scientific innovators in San Rafael, with some lecturers and presentations beamed live to the Turlock campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Oct. 14 through Oct. 16. Speakers include Phillipe Cousteau, Gloria Steinem, Amory Lovins and John D. Liu.

In-person speakers will include CSU Stanislaus history professor, Philip Garone, speaking on “The Fall and Rise of the Wetlands of California’s Great Central Valley,” at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13. From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 14, a presentation will be made on “Students, Communities, and Sustainability.”

Admission to the conference, which will take place in Mary Stuart Rogers Room 130, is free and open to the public.

Kinesiology Department to help break Guinness World Record

Members of the CSU Stanislaus Kinesiology Department are joining a nationwide effort to break the Guinness World Record for most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period.

The world record attempt will see approximately 10,000 people per state do at least one minute of jumping jacks without stopping at some point between noon Oct. 11 and noon Oct. 12. First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to participate, with California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance members coordinating state-wide involvement.

Locally, at 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 12, kinesiology professor Erin Hall will lead Walnut Elementary School students in jumping jacks. The Kinesiology Club will lead Child Development Center students in jumping jacks on the CSU Stanislaus campus at 9:50 a.m., in front of the university gym.
