Powder Puff football made a comeback Friday at Turlock High School after a 25 year hiatus.  The Turlock Bulldogs juniors and seniors girls weren’t afraid to get down and dirty when they faced each other for the first time on the gridiron at Joe Debely Field.  The juniors’ efforts weren’t enough against the wrath of the seniors, who claimed a 12-0 victory.

“The six years that I’ve been at THS, students have wanted to do it,” said Dance and Cheer coach at THS Jennifer Cullum.  “A lot of the other local schools do it and we have not been able to for the past 25 years.  There was an issue or injury at the last game and the school district would no longer allow it.  Last year I asked and they said yes if our administration would support it.  Our administration said yes. The students were very excited to participate.”

Although the novice footballers were given only a week to prepare for the big game, both teams polished their skills in time to compete.

“We are going to smash the juniors,” said senior Claire Silva before the game started.

 Dressed in wigs and tutus, the varsity football players cheered their senior girls on the sidelines and performed a memorable performance during halftime.

“The football players took their role as cheerleaders very serious,” said Cullen.  “It’s nice to see the roles being switched with our players and everyone having a good time.”

 The friendly competition earned the senior girls bragging rights until next year.
