The Turlock Unified School District is bringing back at least one victim of the recent budget cuts — library resources.

On Tuesday, the TUSD trustees voted to restore hours to current library technicians and create three new positions. The

 “There’s a combination of library technicians who are currently divided into the school sites and many of them work very few hours,” said TUSD’s Director of Human Resources Jason Maggard.  “We wanted to increase the hours of employees who had less than six hours of work.  Our initial plan was to divide the hours equally but we ran into some problems.  There were some employees who worked eight hours and this expenditure would conflict with employees who already have their full hours.”

Trustees modified the expenditure and approved to extend the library tech positions to eight hours at K-6 sites during Tuesday’s board meeting, which opens three new positions for library technicians for the district.

“I think this is wonderful,” said trustee Frank Lima.  “This gives the opportunity for library techs who were laid off during the budget cuts to reapply for the district again.”

The restoration of library tech positions will cost the district an additional $40,000 from its previous estimated cost of $118,000.

Trustees approved a district reserve level of 10 percent, equivalent to $11.6 million for the 2013-14 school year, allowing for spending up to $700,000 in on-going expenditures.
