MODESTO — Even without their top scorer, the Turlock High girls golfers got it done.

Again.

For the eighth consecutive time, the Bulldogs captured the Central California Conference title. Their latest trophy-grabbing experience came Tuesday afternoon at Creekside Golf Course, where Turlock outlasted Merced High by 21 strokes (450-471) in the par-72, 18-hole tournament to give the Bulldogs another team appearance at Monday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South Championships at the same location.

“The whole season,” Turlock coach Mary Krupka said, “someone steps it up for the team.”

The Bulldogs did it without Hannah Gong, the team’s No. 1 scorer who is attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis this week. In her absence, Kelsi Valenzuela and Zara Lopez stepped up with scores of 88s, followed by 91s by Emma Mendes and Darcy Woods and Sofie Bates’ 92.

“I didn’t have any doubts,” Krupka said. “I knew the girls could take it.”

Though Turlock and Merced qualified as a team, Pitman High finished the day with four individuals who will advance to next week’s Section tournament. And they are: Sienna Samra, Bella Mata, Sheyenne Sousa and Beth Sommerville. The Pride finished with a team total of 543 to take third place at Tuesday’s league tournament.

Hilmar wins league title

The Hilmar High girls golfers captured the Valley Foothill League title at Diablo Grande Ranch Golf Course on Monday after scoring a 446 in the par-72, 18-hole tournament.

Courtney Youngborg had the Yellowjacket’s best score at 98, while Keeley Pettigrew (109), Leah Kollmeyer (115) and Janet Jones (124) also contributed to the team scoring.

The Yellowjackets will move on to the SJS Division V Tournament at Stevinson Ranch on Monday at 9 a.m.
