Turlock girls water polo falls to Merced

Turlock High’s Kristine Groteguth winds back for a shot against Merced High on Thursday.

POSTED October 21, 2011 9:45 p.m.

Against the league’s best, the Turlock High girls water polo team fell 11-5 to Merced High on Thursday at the school’s Steve Feaver Aquatic Center.

For the Bulldogs, it was difficult to stop Merced’s Allison Miller, who had a match-high four goals. The Bears (9-0) are just one win away from a perfect season and consecutive league titles after sharing it with the Bulldogs last season.

Turlock’s Savanna Schaffer finished with a team-high three goals and one assist and Kristine Groteguth record one goal, one assist and three steals, while goalie Abbey Johnson kept herself busy with five saves.

The Bulldogs (7-2) conclude the league season on Thursday night, when they host Pitman High.
