Turlock records 19th straight dual win

Turlock’s Ricco McCombs holds a high single during Wednesday’s four way dual.

POSTED December 23, 2011 6:11 p.m.

Turlock High’s wrestling team continued its streak of success Wednesday morning during a four-way dual that included Freedom High, Oak Ridge High and Central Catholic High. The Bulldogs (19-1) dominated the event that lasted well over four hours, defeating the Falcons 47-9, the Trojans 51-24 and the Raiders 48-17.

“We expected to win,” Turlock’s head coach Mike Contreras said. “Our kids wrestled well and overall it was a good performance for us.”

The three victories on Wednesday marked the 19th straight dual win of the season, giving the Bulldogs a heaping dose of confidence as they prepare for their first league dual against Merced High Jan. 4.

“If someone would have told me that we would lose to Madera and then win 19 dual matches in a row, I wouldn’t have believed it,” Contreras said.

Turlock recorded a total of 16 pins on the day. Even though each team Turlock faced gave up a number of forfeiture points, the Bulldogs — who did take to the mat — performed exceptionally well. Isaac Bertalotto, Erick Parsons, Albino Orozco, Jason Valdovinos, Isaiah Mendoza, Kevin Scroggins and Ricardo Garcia all finished the day undefeated.

“Turlock had solid wrestlers all the way through,” Central Catholic’s assistant head coach and former Bulldog wrestler Ricky Gonzalez said. “You could tell they had more experience.”

“I’m proud of where we’re at and where we’re headed,” Contreras said. “Now our focus is squarely on Merced.”
