Lady Bulldogs splash past Pride

Turlock’s Taylor Ann Tilby looks for an open teammate while Pitman’s Kamarin Waite reaches for the ball on Tuesday during a CCC matchup.

It was a close match between Turlock and Pitman High when the Lady Bulldogs and Pride met in the Steve Feaver Aquatic Center on Tuesday, or in the words of Turlock Head Coach Sonja Raynes, “It was a barn burner.”

Pitman’s Taylor Jarvis struck first at the 5:31 mark of the first quarter but Turlock’s tandem of Savanna Schaffer and Rebekah Groteguth quickly erased the Pride’s lead as Schaffer scored at 4:03 and 2:01 and Groteguth found the goal at 3:01 of the first quarter.

Kamarin Waite responded with two back-to-back goals for Pitman, tying the match with three seconds left in the first half. Waite scored her third goal of the day with 4:46 left in the third quarter to give the Pride (1-4 CCC) their first lead of the match — but the Bulldogs (3-2 CCC) took over from there.

“We just played each other on Saturday and Pitman beat us, so we knew what we were up against,” Raynes said. “We shifted some players to different positions today and it worked out.”

Schaffer tied the score at four points apiece before Groteguth unleashed an offensive onslaught of three straight goals, the last of which came with 1:39 left in regulation. Pitman’s Anna Porter recorded her team’s final goal in the fourth quarter to make the score 7-5.

Schaffer finished the day with three goals and Groteguth finished with four.

“When she’s having a good day everyone has a good day,” Raynes said of Groteguth.

Pitman gets a chance to bounce back on Tuesday when it hosts Atwater High. As for the Bulldogs, they continue their Central California Conference campaign on Tuesday as well, traveling to Golden Valley High to challenge the Cougars.

“We’re feeling pretty confident,” Raynes said. “Now we start the second round of league play so we need to get all Ws or we’re going to fall behind. I think they’re ready.”
