TC Hall of Fame inducts two new members

POSTED April 19, 2011 10:33 p.m.

Two former Turlock Christian High standout athletes — Nate Watkins (class of 1983) and Lisa Minturn (class of ’87) — will be inducted to the Turlock Christian Hall of Fame at a banquet on May 7 at Calvary Baptist. The keynote speaker for the event is Bill McCartney, a nationally recognized speaker and author of five books, including “Sold Out.”

The program starts at 6:30 p.m.

Watkins was a three-sport athlete at Turlock Christian, where he excelled in basketball, baseball and soccer. During his senior year, he averaged 24.2 points in basketball, enough to win his league’s MVP honors, and he became a first-team all-league pitcher in baseball, going a perfect 5-0 with one 17-strikeout performance. He was also a first-team all-league player in soccer.

He then went on to graduate from Azusa Pacific with a degree in music before earning his master’s degree in the same field at UCLA. Watkins is now an associate pastor at Grace Church in Glendora and an adjunct professor on the music faculty of Azusa Pacific.

He lives in Glendora with his wife, Rocio, and their three sons.

Minturn was also a three-sport standout at TC, as she’s considered the best girls basketball player to ever go through the program. She went on to compete in basketball and tennis at Cal State Stanislaus, where she led the women’s basketball team to the 1989 Division III Championship game. That accomplishment led to her induction into the Stanislaus Athletic Hall of Fame.

Minturn lives in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with her husband, Jim Aiken, and their three children. Minturn has worked for ReachGlobal, the international mission of the Evangelical Free Church of America, since 1997.

Tickets to the event are available at the following Turlock locations: Bilson’s Sporting Goods, Balswick’s Tire and the Family Bible Center. The Talon Club is sponsoring the induction, with further information available at www.turlocktalonclub.com.
