Stanislaus grad earns second All-Star nod

POSTED June 10, 2011 8:50 p.m.

Former Cal State Stanislaus baseball standout Marquis Fleming has been named a 2011 Southern League All-Star. Fleming — a pitcher for the Montgomery (Alabama) Biscuits, the Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays of the MLB — will play for the South Division on June 21 at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn.
Fleming is having another solid year as a reliever, posting a 2-2 record with a 2.11 ERA. In 20 games, he has pitched 42 2/3 innings while notching an astounding 57 strikeouts, amounting for more than 12 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. He is holding opponents to a .188 batting average.
This is Fleming's second All-Star game as a professional, as he was named to the Florida State All-Star game last year.
At Stanislaus, Fleming was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year in 2008, when he was also the West Region Pitcher of the Year and named an All-American. Soon after, he became the 24th-round pick of the Rays in the MLB First-Year Player Draft.
