The men’s basketball team at California State University, Stanislaus blew by Dominican University Thursday 82-68. The Warriors (7-2) were led by Reggie Jones who finished the game with 24 points, 17 of which came in the first quarter. Jones also recorded 10 rebounds against the Penguins (1-10) who surprised those in attendance with a competitive first half.

Though the Penguins never quite held a lead in the game their defense utilized their speed to force a handful of Warrior turnovers and keep the score close. By halftime Dominican trailed by only four points, 37-33.

Whereas the first half was dominated by Jones the second half belonged to Donald Gaines who recorded 11 second half points. Gaines’ effort combined with an energized defense sparked a run of 14 unanswered points, extending the Warriors’ lead and essentially ensuring their victory. At one point, midway through the second half, Stanislaus led by as much as 25 points. Three last minute three point shots from Dominican shortened the lead but the Warriors still won by double digits.

Cal State Stanislaus scored 80 or more points for the fourth time and held its opponent in the 60s for the sixth time this season. As a group, the Warriors shot 55.6 percent on the night, including a sparkling 60 percent in the second half.

Xander McNally led Dominican with 15 points.

Stanislaus’ next game will be against Chico State in Chico on Monday for its sixth CCAA matchup.
