The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season just before the Warriors turned the calendar as they beat Holy Names, 68-61, Saturday night.
Briana Cotton led the Warriors with 19 points, Devin Brown scored 16 and Lauren Godde turned in another double-double for the win. It is also first-year head coach Wayman Strickland's first victory at Cal State Stanislaus (1-8).
Godde scored 12 points and pulled 13 rebounds. She also had four steals. Despite being a little off on her shooting touch, going 4-for-16, Godde was also helped out by twin sister Erin Godde who grabbed 11 rebounds.
Cotton filled some scoring void with another hot shooting night, hitting seven of her 14 tries for her fourth straight double-digit scoring game. In the last four games, Cotton averaged 15.8 points per game with a pair of career-high 19s.
For Lauren Godde, it was her fourth double-double this season and 12th of her career.
Holy Names (4-4) was led by Dominque Williams who had 14 points. Renique Fitzpatrick led all players with 16 rebounds as the Hawks out-rebounded the Warriors, 63-48. HNU made just one three-pointer on 16 attempts (Britney Potestio was 1 for 15).
The Warriors took advantage of Holy Names' poor first half shooting for a 41-23 halftime lead. The Hawks managed to make eight field goals (20.5 percent). Stanislaus led by as many as 20 points, 39-19, at 3:51 left after a Natalie Winters free throw. The Warriors made 36.8 percent of their shots in the first half, including three three-pointers.
Holy Names made a comeback in the second half and cut the Warriors' lead to six points, 58-52, as late as 5:05 to go. A pair of free throws by Cotton and a jumper by Lauren Godde gave the Warriors another 10-point advantage.
Cal State Stanislaus made six of its last eight free throws in the final two minutes of the game to hold on for the win.
The Warriors will next play two home games, against San Francisco State on Friday and Sonoma State on Saturday. Both games start at 5:30 p.m. at Warrior Arena.
