It was a tense night in Hollister for the players of Modesto Babe Ruth. In their first-round matchup against Tracy, Modesto found themselves trailing by three runs for the majority of the game. Luckily, the team was able to turn things around in the second half of the game and claim victory, 8-3.

“You don’t go into a game expecting to be trailing 3-0,” Modesto’s Coach Bobby Swedberg said. “The team gave us an opportunity to get back into the game and eventually take the lead.”

Modesto scored its first run in the top of the fourth inning but it was the fifth inning that saw them close Tracy’s lead. With Matt Tyler and A.J. Derr on base, Tracy began to throw wild pitches and commit costly errors. Tyler scored his team’s second run on a passed ball, advancing Derr from second base to third. On the next at bat, Cameron Godfrey rocked a single to score Derr and tie the game.

Modesto snatched the lead in the sixth inning with two runs and then finished things off in the seventh inning, scoring their final runs off Klayton Miller and Cody Simar’s bats.

Modesto is not one game away from the championship game. They play today at 4 p.m. in Hollister.

“We’re just going to play it one game at a time and wee how we do,” Swedberg said.
