Death Row inmates are a drain on taxpayers

POSTED September 24, 2012 3:12 p.m.

Editor,

There are 729 murderers on Death Row. They have killed more than once. How do you think it costs more to kill them, when they use the people that pay taxes?

We pay to feed them all the years they are there. If they need heart surgery, or any other big surgery they need to have, the taxpayers have to pay for all of it. When they take one of the murderers to a big hospital in Modesto to have the surgery, we have to pay for all of his bills and the two guards that sit on each side of his bed until he is OK to take (back to jail). I know because I saw it for myself. There are people who are paying for his bills who can’t afford to go to the hospital themselves. There is something really wrong here. I just had heart surgery. I am paying for big bills.

Good question. You also might ask why healthcare companies pay their CEOs millions of dollars; you certainly are not making a rich income or else you would not be concerned about paying big bills.

The more people who pay into a public healthcare system (single-payer, Medicare, Veterans Administration) the lower your cost. Think about it.

I am sorry you had a big expense regarding your health. It should not be this way.
