Does it create a harmonious and balanced home by bringing in plenty of fresh cut flowers and hanging chimes, or will simply removing the clutter do the trick?
Tess Whitehurst, feng shui consultant, author and one-time Turlock resident, likely has the answer.
Whitehurst has penned the book “Magical Housekeeping: Simple Charms and Practical Tips for Creating a Harmonious Home.” She will be at the Barnes and Noble store in Modesto from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday to sign copies of her book.
Whitehurst says she used her experiences as a feng shui consultant to write the book, which she describes as “a method of consciously interacting with your home to create positive change in your life.”“The term feng shui has come to sound so esoteric and inaccessible,” Whitehurst said. “I wanted to bring the whole concept back down to earth, where it belongs. When your home makes you happy, you’re happy. And when you’re happy, everything in your life works better. It’s really as simple as that.”
Her upbringing in Turlock has also created a lasting impression that Whitehurst draws upon when approaching a new home.
“The Central Valley is really a very home-centered region,” Whitehurst said. “Family ties go deep, friendships last, and people actually have the luxury of growing roots. Being raised in the Central Valley taught me the importance of the atmosphere of the home, and how it can really anchor us in a feeling of joy and meaningfulness that you can’t get anywhere else. Perhaps that’s why I come back home to visit so often, and still feel so at home whenever I’m in Turlock.”
Fans of the Bravo reality TV show “Flipping Out” might remember seeing Whitehurst on one of last season’s episodes entitled “Bad Mojo.” In it, she essentially tells the temperamental star Jeff Lewis that in order to promote the harmony in his household and business, he needs to allow his employees a bit more freedom and space.
