Turlock chef returns to defend title

Turlock's Bistro 234 chef Leroy Walker took home the title in the Culinary Clash II in March 2009.

POSTED April 19, 2011 10:25 p.m.

Turlock’s Bistro 234 chef Leroy Walker will once again get into competition mode as he prepares to defend his title at Doctors Medical Center fourth annual Culinary Clash.

Walker previously took home the title in the Culinary Clash II in March 2009. In this go around he’ll be picking up his knives and spatula and competing against John Surla of Surla’s and Bryan Ehrenholm of Pure Joy Bakery and the Lunch Pail for the ultimate title of “Culinary Clash King.”

The Culinary Clash is a fund-raising benefit for Doctors Medical Center Foundation and is conducted in the style of “Iron Chef.” Using a secret ingredient and a fully stocked pantry, the three chefs will have one hour to prepare an appetizer, a pasta dish and a main entree for the judges to critique.

Special guest, Martin Yan of “Yan Can Cook,” will reveal the secret ingredient and sit on the panel of expert judges.

Attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite chef among this year’s contenders and crown one of them “Peoples’ Choice Chef.”

The benefit also features a wide range of local restaurants and wineries offering up samples. There will be raffles, demos, games and prizes to win.

Proceeds from the event help support the Alzheimer’s Day Care program, Diabetes Outreach and the MoMobile, among other programs, said DMC Foundation Executive Director Thomas Truax.

The event will be held on April 28 at the Modesto Centre Plaza. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to the general public. Tickets are $50 in advance or $60 at the door.  The event tends to sell out. Tickets are available at DMC Foundation at 730 McHenry Ave., or on the Web site at www.dmcf.org.  For more information call 527-3412.
