Woman killed on Golden State Boulevard

POSTED October 10, 2012 12:54 p.m.

A female pedestrian was struck and killed early this morning on Golden State Boulevard, just south of Turlock.

The woman has not been identified pending next of kin notification.

The incident was reported just before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday on the southbound lanes of Golden State Boulevard, south of Griffith Avenue.

The driver of the 2005 Mazda 3 that struck the woman was identified by the California Highway Patrol as Carlos Desousa, 45, of Delhi.

According to the CHP Desousa was traveling at about 55 mph in the southbound lane of Golden State Boulevard.

The pedestrian walked from the west shoulder in an easterly direction directly into the path of the oncoming Mazda, the CHP reported.

Desousa hit his brakes but was unable to avoid striking the woman.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Desousa was transported to Emanuel Medical Center with minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The collision remains under investigation.
