Kaepernick jerseys prove to be an elusive gift

POSTED November 30, 2012 9:09 p.m.

The hottest gift in Turlock this Christmas season could be a San Francisco 49ers Colin Kaepernick  jersey, but finding a store that carries them could be the tricky part.

Kaepernick, a Turlock native and Pitman High School graduate, has been garnering national attention for his prowess on the field and has earned his third start at quarterback for Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Ram’s.

With the holidays approaching, merchandise with Kaepernick’s name is becoming a hot commodity in the area.

Diego Jimenez of Sporters at Vintage Faire Mall in Modesto has noticed that as Kaepernick’s fame grows, more fans call or come into the store asking if Kaepernick jerseys are available for sale.

“I will get calls all the time from people asking if we sell the jersey,” Jimenez said. “We never sold them before, now they are all on order. I’ve had people pre-ordering them from us.”

Though Sporters has a large front display of 49er gear, none of the items at this time relate to the local quarterback. Instead, Jimenez has said that the most popular jerseys in the store were San Francisco 49ers Patrick Willis and Vernon Davis.

But since Kaepernick’s recently took the 49ers by the helm, the quarterback was able to gain more popularity and notice on account of his superior arm strength, straight sweeps, and power runs.

“We are aware that he is local. We know that he is popular. When it was packed during Black Friday, everyone was asking if we sold Kaepernick jerseys. It was because of the Bears game,” Jimenez said, referring to the 49ers 32-7 win against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 19, the Monday night game just before Black Friday.

Though the jerseys are expected to be in just weeks before Christmas, Jimenez hopes that there will be enough Kaepernick jerseys for last minute shoppers.

“They are expected to get here before Christmas. Hopefully,” Jimenez stressed, “they will get here by then.”

Kaepernick’s No.7 jersey is available online at the NFL shop for $99.99.
