A Sonora man lost his life and a Delhi man was critically injured in a collision on Geer Road in Hughson Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Roy Gillespie, 33, of Sonora.

The collision happened at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday on Geer Road, near Hatch Road in Hughson, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Gillespie was driving a 2013 Nissan sedan northbound on Geer Road, north of Hatch Road.

Vidal Calderon, 61, of Delhi was driving a 2005 Chevrolet pickup southbound on Geer Road.

For an unknown reason, Calderon allowed the pickup truck to drift out of his lane and to the right, where it struck a raised asphalt curb parallel to the road, according to the CHP.

The Chevrolet then veered back onto the road and into the northbound lane, where it struck the Nissan head-on.

The Nissan left the east road edge before coming to a rest, while the Chevrolet overturned onto its right side and came to a stop across the road.

Gillespie had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Calderon had major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center.

The CHP does not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

Both men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
