A Delhi teenager was struck down by a suspected drunk driver and died from her injuries Tuesday night, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The deceased was identified as Jennifer Arroyo, 17, of Delhi.

The CHP was able to make an arrest in the case after the driver, identified as Michael Lindo, 33, of Delhi returned to the scene of the collision.

The collision happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday in the area of August Avenue and Palm Street in Delhi.

Lindo was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe east on August Avenue when he struck Arroyo. He was going an estimated 30 miles per hour at the time, according to the CHP.

The incident was witnessed by several people, who began CPR on Arroyo and informed CHP officers of the driver’s departure from the scene.

Emergency medical technicians took over administered CPR to Arroyo, but her injuries were too severe and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

As investigators were processing the scene and gathering evidence, Lindo reportedly returned to the area. He was suspected of being under the influence and was taken into0 custody.

Lindo was booked into the Merced County Jail on allegations of first-degree murder, DUI causing great bodily harm and/or death, hit and run resulting in death, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Merced County Court records show Lindo has prior convictions from driving under the influence.

He is being held at the county jail in lieu of a $1.4 million bail.
