A Turlock man was arrested Monday for growing marijuana with the intent to sell after a 7-year-old living at the residence came to school smelling of the narcotic.

Jonathan Cardenas, 30, was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana with the intent to sell on Monday after officers searched the residence and found a marijuana grow operation, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Steve Rodrigues.

The investigation began when a teacher noticed the 7-year-old boy had a distinct odor of marijuana wafting around him. The school contacted the police department, which in turn contacted the child’s mother at a home in the 600 block of S. Soderquist.

The mother agreed to let the officers into the residence and they located multiple marijuana plants, as well as other items indicating the narcotic was being sold, Rodrigues said.

Cardenas was taken into custody without incident. No other arrests were made.

Rodrigues said the child had the odor of marijuana just from proximity, not through use of the narcotic.
