A Turlock man already facing charges of hit and run was also charged with assault when he attacked a nurse.

According to the Turlock Police Department, Robert Souza, 52, was driving in the area of Lander and South avenues around 7 p.m. Saturday when he hit a bicyclist.

The bicyclist had minor injuries from the collision and was taken to Emanuel Medical Center for treatment, said Turlock Police Lt. Jeff Lopes.

Souza fled the scene of the collision, but was located nearby and stopped by officers.

Souza was arrested for felony driving under the influence and felony hit and run. For an unknown reason he was transported to Memorial Medical Center, where he punched a nurse.

Lopes said there was no particular incident that sparked Souza’s ire towards the nurse. Souza did have to be forcibly restrained by the officers present at the hospital.

A charge of felony assault was tacked on to Souza’s charges.
