A two vehicle collision in east Modesto Monday morning resulted in the death of a 43-year-old Turlock man.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Al Avila of Turlock.

Avila was killed in a collision at Claribel and Bentley roads in Modesto, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Avila was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla westbound on Claribel around 7 a.m. Monday. Oscar Ibarra, 22, of Oakdale was driving northbound on Bentley in a 2011 Jeep Compass. As Ibarra approached the intersection between the two roads, he failed to stop at a posted sign, according to the CHP.

The Jeep broadsided the Corolla in the intersection. The force of the impact sent both vehicles off the road and into a nearby field.

Avila was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drugs and alcohol were not considered factors in the collision.

The investigation remains open at it is possible a complaint could be filed on Ibarra with the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, the CHP reported.
