Retirees honored by school district

Sandi Sing walked across the stage of the Turlock High School Performing Arts Building amid applause, handshakes, and hugs from the Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees.
Sing was one of five retirees recognized for their years of service to the Turlock Unified School District. The other four teachers were not in attendance at the meeting, but were formally recognized and thanked at the Aug. 18 Board of Trustees meeting.
Sing took a few minutes to thank the District for all of the opportunities that it gave her, and to reflect on her 36 years of teaching. Sing said that she was a student in the District many years ago, and she came to Turlock speaking little to no English.
“I am proof that even an EL (English learner) student can succeed in Turlock,” Sing said.
Throughout her years of teaching, Sing encountered several schools in the Bay Area who wanted to recruit her because she spoke Chinese. Sing said that she felt that she belonged in Turlock, and this is where she stayed throughout her teaching career.
The following are the retirees’ biographies submitted to the Board of Trustees:

Sandi has taught at Osborn, Julien, Dutcher and Walnut Schools. She has always been an innovator and an instructional leader. She has played a prominent role in Multicultural education (Global Ed), arts education (District Art Shows) and has been an arts advocate for children and adults in schools and the greater community. She actively fosters positive, sincere relationships with everyone. Sandi unfailingly visualizes possibilities and makes things happen for kids and thinks not of obstacles.
