Five different chapters, one sorority and one goal: help a Sigma Omega Phi sister and former Stanislaus State student who was recently diagnosed with stage four breast cancer.

Alma Alegria is part of the Stanislaus local chapter for the sorority and is doing her part for her Sigma Omega Phi sister, Eva Perez.

“The treatment has been so bad on her body that she can’t work anymore,” said Alegria. “Eva played a really important role in establishing our chapter here at Stanislaus and we want to help her anyway we can.”

Alegria is an employee of Mr. Pickles on Geer Road in Turlock and has organized a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to Perez in an effort to keep her financially stable during this hard time.

“We found out [about the diagnosis] about two weeks ago,” said Alegria. “Every chapter is trying to help and Eva has been so overwhelmed with support from so many sisters.”

Alegria explained that within the five different chapters of Sigma Omega Phi located in Northern California, every chapter is doing something different but all aim to raise money for Perez.

Alegria said that some chapters are doing fundraisers at local restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings where they’re located, a chapter in San Jose is selling ribbons and others are coming up with other unique attempts to support Perez.

Tickets to the 50/50 raffle can be purchased at Mr. Pickles and the winner will receive a gift card of half of the amount of money raised. Her goal is to reach at least $100 for Perez, but added that anything more than that would be even better.

“Eva really needs our help and I’m hoping that the community will help get behind her and donate to such a great cause,” she said.

Tickets will be sold at the cash register of Mr. Pickles, 1521 Geer Rd. and the raffle will run through Nov.15.
